FAQ

It’s hard to pinpoint what your move will cost. Your move will be priced either by the weight for interstate moves or by the hour for local moves. There are several variables that come into play, and every one’s move is different. That is why we do a survey. A survey allows us to more accurately estimate the amount of weight that you will be moving. We can also find out if there are any variables that would increase the amount of time to move you, such as stairs, bulky items (piano, etc.), and long carries from the truck to the house.

The insurance requires proof of pre-existing damage done to your household goods. Without the inventories, the insurance company would not know if the damage had already been there prior to the move. While it is never a good idea to waive the inventory on a move, it is never an option on a long distance move.

Pricing for interstate and intrastate moves are factored by weight and mileage. Local moves are priced by the hour.

The Catch-A-Trip is a program set up by Northwestern Warehouse that allows a customer to ship household goods to its destination for a discounted price by attaching the household goods to another shipment going to the same area that Northwestern Warehouse hauls. This is not an Allied program, so you are subject to the availability of a Northwestern Warehouse truck going to the same destination.

You can set up an exact date with a Total Price Guarantee or with a date spread in a UAS shipment that will calculate cost based on exact weight to deliver.

A TPG is a non binding guaranteed price pledge based on one of our surveyors seeing how much stuff you have and giving you flat price.  Price may vary if more times show up that were not seen by the surveyor when the price was guaranteed.

In a UAS shipment, your move is priced out at the exact weight and is a binding agreement.

If the shipment is self hauled, Northwestern Warehouse can give you more of a guarantee that your shipment will arrive on a specified date. If the shipment is turned over to an Allied driver you would have a date spread on when the driver will be at the destination. Allied drivers are subject to Allied dispatchers.

If you cannot meet the driver to unload your shipment, the driver will find the closest warehouse that will accept your shipment and put your HHG’s into storage until you are ready to have your items delivered. You will need to coordinate with the storage warehouse for storage fees and delivery out charges.

If the shipment is turned over to an Allied driver you would have a date spread on when the driver will be at the destination. Allied drivers are subject to Allied dispatchers. If the shipment is self hauled by Northwestern Warehouse then you can get more of a guarantee that your shipment will arrive on a specified date.

We are upfront with you on any situation that might increase the price of your move. We don’t, however, see the destination address and are subject to the information given by the customer. You will only have costs that you are unaware of if the customer fails to mention any pertinent information that would affect the price such as a semi not able to get to the residence at the destination. You’d incur a shuttle charge for delivery.

We, at Northwestern Warehouse, have full time qualified staff that will assist the drivers load and unload the trucks. We also have a list of qualified laborers that only work for the drivers that we can call. Anyone working with an Allied driver and any employee of Northwestern Warehouse are required to have a background check before they are able to perform any work for Allied.

Per Federal Regulation, moving companies carry basic “no premium” liability coverage of $0.60 per pound per article. For example: if you have a 100# table that gets damaged, NWW or AVL would pay $60.00 to fix or replace the table. We also offer optional, full replacement value coverage that we call E.C.P. (Extra Care Protection). If you purchase E.C.P., we will repair or replace the damaged item. However, E.C.P. does cost more. Damage is an inherent risk whenever items are moved; no matter who does the work. We recommend you purchase Extra Care Protection, for the same reasons you buy car insurance. You hope not to use it, but it’s there if you need it. Your moving consultant can explain how that cost is calculated, and answer any questions you might have about your coverage options.

If you are worried about some items, or are nervous about packing some of your more valuable household items, we offer Extra Care Protection to give you the most comprehensive valuation liability plan in the industry. With the Extra Care Protection, we provide the full replacement value or cost of repair for any item that is lost or damaged during the move. With the peace of mind that comes with this protection plan, we also guarantee that if a matched set is destroyed, you will be compensated for a new set if we are unable to find the exact replacement.

We don’t recommend putting everything into boxes and hoping that everything will make it to its destination in one piece. If there are items that are especially important to you, the proper steps need to be taken in order to protect the item from incurring any damage during the move. If you have any questions about how to pack and handle items fragile items, talk to your Rapid City movers. Let us know that you have items that require special attention and care in order to ensure that they will arrive at their destination without any problems.

The Full Replacement Cost Valuation is a great option to ensure all the goods will be repaired to the original condition or replaced with a similar item (kind and price). Our crews are professionally trained and use the proper padding and equipment for your move, however Damage to your goods is an inherent risk in moving (whether you move with a moving company, move yourself, mover long distance or across town). You should carry Full Replacement Cost Valuation just like you Carry Car Insurance. You hope not to use it, but it’s there if you need it.

In some cases your Homeowner’s Policy will cover your goods during the moving. However, often they just cover the goods moving in or out of your house, not while they are on our truck. It’s important to check with your Insurance Agent to see what specifically will be covered. Also, you may want to consider what costs (increased Insurance rates, time off work for inspections, etc) would be involved in placing a claim against your Homeowner’s Policy.

While most household good items are covered under the additional Valuation Coverage, some items are excluded: These items include but are not limited to Coin/Stamp Collections, Jewelry, and Fur Coats, as well as sentimental items such as family photos. If you have specific item that you are worried about covering, it’s best to mention this to the Moving Consultant and they will be able to advise you on the best way for these items to be handled.

Per Federal Law, there are items that can’t be moved. They are primarily flammable and combustible items that are most often found in garages, bathrooms, and kitchens. Our Transportation Limitations Sheet provides examples of these types of items.

For local moves, we collect payment after the work is completed. Your crew will call our office for the actual price, then collect payment via a local check or debit/credit card.

For long distance moves, we collect payment before our trucks are unloaded at the destination address. We accept certified checks, employer checks, or credit cards. However, we cannot accept personal checks for long distance moves.
